The work—co-composed by Chinese-Canadian composers Tang Kang-nian and Pan Xing-hai—was directed by Nancy Hermiston of UBC Opera and conducted by young maestro Yuan Xin. Performances by artists from the UBC Opera Division together with the Suzhou University Symphony Orchestra and choir earned widespread acclaim and achieved resounding success.
Yang Shubing, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education; Liu Bo, Vice Mayor of Suzhou Municipal People’s Government; Cha Zuoming, Member of the Party Committee Standing Committee and Vice President of Suzhou University; and other leaders were present at the event.
Officials from the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, Suzhou Municipal Government, and Suzhou University, together with representatives from foreign partner and supporting organizations, also attended.
Wu Lei, Dean of the Suzhou University School of Music, delivered a welcome address, expressing heartfelt thanks to the UBC "Thunderstorm" visiting delegation for coming to Suzhou University.
He said the performance marked an important milestone in Sino-Canadian arts education exchange and created a high-level international platform for artistic dialogue between the two schools; such cross-cultural artistic interaction, he added, will further advance deep cooperation in areas like creative practice and talent cultivation.
Yang Shubing, Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, said the successful staging of Thunderstorm represents a deep practice of Sino-Canadian cultural exchange and fully demonstrates close cooperation between the two countries in arts education.
He highlighted his pleasure at seeing young Chinese and Canadian artists achieve cross-cultural artistic dialogue and emotional resonance through music and drama, noting this fosters mutual cultural learning and offers valuable experience for training international artistic talent. Deputy Director Yang thanked the event organizers and performers for their hard work and expressed hope for more fruitful cooperation in the humanities and arts between China and Canada in the future.
Young conductor Yuan Xin opened the performance with masterful conducting.
The opera Thunderstorm vividly demonstrated art’s power to cross borders, forging deep bonds between university students; after the show, young artists lingered on stage—exchanging reflections on the performance and sharing cultural experiences.
The tour promoted Sino-Canadian cultural exchange and deepened cultural cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries. It served as a cross-cultural dialogue and a showcase of the seamless integration of Chinese artistic tradition with Western modern opera.
The one-month tour covered nine cities—Harbin, Daqing, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Chengdu, Ya’an, Nanjing, Suzhou and Beijing—and aimed to connect East and West through the art of opera, creating a stage for cultural fusion.

About the Opera Thunderstorm
The opera is adapted from Cao Yu’s classic play Thunderstorm. In 1999, composer Tang Kang-nian travelled to Beijing to meet Cao Yu’s widow, Li Yuru. After hearing three arias Tang had written, she gave strong approval and repeatedly stressed that the character of Fan Yi should remain the dramatic focus.
Honouring that guidance, Tang shaped the opera around the tragic fate of Fan Yi. While preserving the play’s core conflicts, he presents them through richly musical means—interweaving arias, ensembles, and brief spoken passages. Multiple concert-style textures are folded into the score, allowing the music’s power to amplify the story. The result is a seamless, emotionally charged work in which vivid characters and layered situations come alive on stage.

Ms. Pan Xing-hai
Composers & Creative Background
Composer Tang Kang-nian devoted more than twenty years to writing most of the opera’s arias and choral numbers.
In 2017, after Tang fell gravely ill, his wife Pan Xing-hai vowed to finish his musical dream. Working with playwright He Zhaohua (former Director, Shanghai Opera House), she first completed the revised libretto, then composed the remaining music—including all recitatives.
